Phonological variation affects all levels of phonology. In this presentation, we will discuss a model assuming segmental as well as tonal asymmetries in synchronic phonological systems and argue that asymmetric contrast sensitivity assists in resolving variation. Evidence comes from feature spreading, quantity alternation as well as tonal variation based on a series of psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic experiments in German, English, Swedish and Bengali.
