University of Edinburgh
Nicole (she/her) is a first year undergraduate at the University of Edinburgh studying Linguistics and English Language. Hailing from Hong Kong, she is particularly interested in second language acquisition and sociolinguistics. University of Edinburgh

Kazune Sato, Webmaster
University College London
Kazune ('Kaz', 'Kazu') is a final year Linguistics undergraduate at UCL. Whilst his current research mainly revolves around syntax, he is interested in various linguistics subfields such as semantics, phonology, morphology and linguistic typology. As the official Marking Coordinator for UKLO, he is also responsible for overseeing marking of the very many Round 1 scripts taking place in February each year. His free-time hobbies include writing some Linguistic Olympiad-style linguistics puzzles and learning some new languages - and outside of linguistics, he can be found exploring board games, cooking with a pressure cooker and hunting for delicious Asian food! -
Matthew Hale, Social Media Coordinator
University of Edinburgh
Matthew Hale is a second year Russian and Linguistics student at the University of Edinburgh. His interests lie in the dynamics between language variation within minority groups in relation to more influential majority groups - particularly with regards to phonetics, phonology and morphosyntax. His guilty pleasure involves talking to Praat like it's his best friend, experimenting with the wonders of our phonetic production capabilities. When not sounding like a phonetic nerd (or to non-linguists, someone with a perpetually strange-sounding yawn), he loves to get involved with music within the community, playing violin and flute for various ensembles, and conducting a European Folk choir. -
Beatrix Livesey-Stephens, Social Media Coordinator
University of Aberdeen
Beatrix (Bea) Livesey-Stephens (she/her) is a final year Language & Linguistics student at the University of Aberdeen. She is particularly interested in linguistic anthropology, specifically pertaining to gaming and fantasy. She still lives in fear of theta roles. When not doing Linguistics, she’s definitely spelling ‘LaTeX’ wrong in a tweet on the ULAB account and getting called out by a Linguistics Twitter bot. -
Cecilia Tang, Institutional Representative Coordinator
University of Manchester
Cecilia is a second-year undergraduate student at the University of Manchester. They’ve enjoyed exploring a lot of areas of linguistics, but they are most interested in first and second language acquisition, as well as cross-linguistic variation. Their research interests include prosody and Deaf linguistics, with a focus on the cognitive processes behind them. When not sorting through the ULAB archives, they can be found archiving for Dr. Dan Gunn’s soon to be published biography. In their spare time, they are an avid bug collector and Keats enthusiast, and will lecture about both unprompted if you’re not careful. -
Kitty Liu, Magazine Editor-in-Chief
University of Cambridge
Kitty is in her second year studying undergraduate Linguistics at Cambridge. She is interested in historical linguistics, bilingualism, sociopragmatics, and functionalism. When not doing linguistics, she sings in her College choir, reads pretentious novels, gives people unsolicited etymologies, and knits compulsively to fill the void. -
Trudy Kalvynaite, Events Coordinator
University of Edinburgh
Trudy is a third year Psychology and Linguistics student at the University of Edinburgh. She enjoys tackling the exciting nature of syntax trees, unravelling theories of universal grammar and language acquisition as well as fantisizing about linguistic fieldwork. Cliodhna Hughes, Opportunities Coordinator
University of Edinburgh
Cliodhna (she/her) is a fourth-year linguistics student at the University of Edinburgh, particularly interested in speech technology, phonetics, language evolution and first language acquisition. Her linguistic interests lie primarily with second language acquisition (naturally) and natural language processing.
